and clusterfly swarms!

Aside from wasps, there are few insect pests more annoying than flies. . .  and easily the most complained about species across Hereford and Monmouth, due to their sheer numbers, are Clusterflies.

The Clusterfly is a very common fly pest across the UK that over-winters in ENORMOUS swarms, usually in loft spaces and the reveals of velux or casement windows (especially south facing) and are often the source of sudden, dramatic, infestations in spring. . .  or following a slightly warmer spell.

BONUS: OTHER FLY SPECIES:

The Blue Bottle, Lesser Housefly and Greater Housefly all transmit disease, but there are other primary species that we encounter at different times of year, all of which should be controlled and eliminated where practicable.

Biting house flies:  More and more reports are being received from across the county of house flies that bite!  All of the fly species so far mentioned lack the mouthparts that allow them to bite.  This distressing problem is the Stable Fly.

Almost indistinguishable from common houseflies to the naked eye, the Stable Fly (also known as the Barn Fly or Dog Fly), unlike most members of the family Muscidae, are blood feeders.  Now found worldwide, the species is considered to be of Eurasian origin and is spreading as a direct consequence of a warming climate.

Please don't be embarrassed to report an outbreak.  Despite clusterflies forming a sizeable black mass, often accompanied by a distinct, sickly, smell, the presence of cluster flies is NOT caused by poor hygiene issues in, or around, the property!

treatment

Clusterflies must be eradicated whilst in hibernation during the colder months (from Mid October to late February), when the entire swarm can be treated with insecticides.

BONUS: PROTECTING NON-TARGET SPECIES

(Waspman® will conduct a risk assessment to ensure that they do not share their hibernation spaces with bats, which are a protected species under the Wildlife and Country side Act 1981)

The good news is that Cluster flies are rarely a nuisance from the late spring through to early autumn and the hibernating swarm is usually easy to find, being in the same location year after year.
